Columbus Day: Genocide is not a holiday

It’s key that the critique is not about Republicans and Wall Street. The critique is about the entire political system, which people see as corrupt, and both parties have participated in this corruption of the political system. So I think it’s key that especially the Democratic Party not try to co-opt and the protesters themselves make sure that the party does not co-opt their movement or their energy.

Wall Street Protesters Have Ink-Stained Fingers
There is a well-designed timeline of recent protests dating to the Arab Spring and continuing through the demonstrations in Wisconsin and protests in Europe. The first issue also included a charming photo essay on protest signs and the people who carry them, along with a call to action from Chris Hedges, a former reporter for The New York Times.

Geraldo Rivera Met With Chants Of ‘Fox News Lies’ At Occupy Wall Street (VIDEO)
Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera faced a hostile crowd over the weekend when he went to Lower Manhattan to report on the Occupy Wall Street protests. Rivera had been to the encampment the week before, but this time his report was met with an endless chant of “Fox News lies!”

Bus driver hauling Occupy Wall Street protest prisoners can see both sides of tension
‎”Do I agree with people jumping on the Brooklyn Bridge and stopping traffic? I can’t say that I do,” he said. “Do I agree that sometimes it’s the only way to get your point across to the powers that be? Yes, I do.”

Occupy Wall Street through Egyptian eyes
Zeinab, for one, immediately connects with the protesters as a result of her experiences. It seems that other food vendors would relate better to a clear message against American intervention in the Middle East and North Africa from the movement. This is also perhaps a reflection of the hopes people from around the world have for the movement. While Occupy Wall Street has mostly focused on the debt crises, it is very likely that the movement will at least articulate a position against the military occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Activist Post: Delusional NYC Mayor Bloomberg goes on the offensive against Occupy Wall Street
The protests appear to be working, at least in the sense that it is forcing Wall Street crony and New York City Mayor and multi-billionaire Michael Bloomberg (who literally claimed he didn’t know what the word “responsible” was in court) to out himself as a friend of the elite and an enemy of the people.

Occupy Wall Street isn’t the left’s Tea Party
It was President Obama’s unwillingness to place conditions on the bailout of Wall Street – not demanding, for example, that the banks reorganize the mortgages of distressed homeowners, and that they accept the resurrection of the Glass-Steagall Act, as conditions for getting hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars – that contributed to the new populist insurrection.

Occupy Wall Street Emerges as “First Populist Movement” on the Left Since the 1930s
AMY GOODMAN: And in terms of democratic politics, like Democrats and Republicans, the issue of co-optation and how careful people are to not let this be captured by either party, particularly the Democrats? DORIAN WARREN: Yes, and it’s key that the critique is not about Republicans and Wall Street. The critique is about the entire political system, which people see as corrupt, and both parties have participated in this corruption of the political system. So I think it’s key that especially the Democratic Party not try to co-opt and the protesters themselves make sure that the party does not co-opt their movement or their energy.

Panic of the Plutocrats
The way to understand all of this is to realize that it’s part of a broader syndrome, in which wealthy Americans who benefit hugely from a system rigged in their favor react with hysteria to anyone who points out just how rigged the system is.

EGYPT: A firsthand account: Marching from Shubra to deaths at Maspiro

IRAQ: In western Iraq, a bloody American legacy

Shortly after noon, on the roadside east of Fallujah, an Iraqi teenager was repairing a bike tire. As Bryant’s vehicle passed by, the boy lifted his head, then his arm, and appeared to wag a single digit toward the convoy. “Did you see that kid give us the finger?” asked a soldier in the front of the vehicle. No one answered. The exhausted men of Bravo company had closed their eyes to rest.

PALESTINE: Support grows for Palestinian’s prison strike
Rights groups said the clampdown included preventing access to books, educational programmes and new clothing. It also expanded the use of solitary confinement, reduced family visits and forced detainees to meet their lawyers with their hands cuffed. According to a March 2011 United Nations report, about 6,000 Palestinians are currently in 22 prisons in Israel and the West Bank. Some have been denied contact with the outside world, including their families, for as long as five years, the report said.
